This is your Website so enjoy it. If you have information of interest concerning your Ship Hobart do not let it become lost, contact either the
Secretary or the
Webmaster so it can be published here.
My name is Leo Stakenburg and I have been
requested to become the Association’s Liaison Officer with the Alliance
who is building our Nuship Hobart (AWD).
For those who wonder why, I have a contact
within Australian Shipbuilders Corporation (ASC) in Adelaide where the
new Hobart is being build. I
will be able to convey to you all the latest news regarding Hobart.
As you can see in the paragraph above, Hobart’s Pennant Number will be
39. I understand that at this stage they will be known as DDG’s just
like the previous Hobart 39. (Although I do have to confirm this).
also mentioned the Alliance; they consist of the Department of Materiel
Organisation (Department of Defence), ASC, Raytheon Australia, as well
as Navantia (The Spanish Ship Builders). Navantia are Spain’s leading
Military Ship Builders. They have already built 4 of these ships and
the fifth is presently being built in Spain.
I will give you some
information on each of these Partners. Lockheed Martin and the US
Navy are also involved in this partnership.
Australia
had a choice of this F101 class and modify it to Australia’s needs or
to obtain a F101 which had been modified by America to their needs.
Australia chose the former. The
Nuship Hobart is a modified F101 Class and will be known as the Hobart
Class. It will have a mixture of American and European Weaponry and
Radar. More on this in later issues as the information becomes released
for the public.
One must always remember that a lot of information
regarding these and other Naval Ships is classified. I shall endeavour
to obtain photographs of the Nuship as we progress.
About
the Alliance:
DMO. The
DMO AWD Program Office retains overall responsibility for the project
management and delivery of the three Air Warfare Destroyers. (Hobart,
Brisbane and Sydney). The DMO, through the Minister for Defence, is responsible
to the people of Australia to ensure that the future AWDs are delivered
to the RAN on time, on budget and to the required capability. The DMO
is committed to delivering the most capable ship for the future security
needs of the nation.
As
an integrated member of the AWD Alliance, the DMO will work alongside
ASC and Raytheon Australia staff in the AWD Systems Centre – in Adelaide
South Australia – across a range of technical, financial and project
management areas throughout the life of the program. The DMO will work
closely with Defence and Industry stakeholders to ensure maximum practical
Australian Industry Involvement in the construction and delivery of the
three ships.
ASC
will fabricate, assemble, test and develop a through-life support system
for the HOBART Class AWDs at its shipbuilding facility in Osborne, South
Australia. This
includes: the
procurement of all ship materials and equipment; the
management of subcontract packages for ship module construction around
Australia and subsequent delivery to ASC’s shipbuilding facility; and
installation of Combat System equipment.
ASC
has engaged two capability partners to assist in its role as shipbuilder:
renowned United States ship designer and builder Bath Iron Works (a subsidiary
of General Dynamics) and leading independent engineering consultants
Sinclair Knight and Merz ASC
is also involved with the South Australian Government’s development of
the new Common User Facility infrastructure, including a ship lift, wharf
and dry berths.
With facilities located across the country,
Raytheon Australia delivers mission systems integration and mission support
through an engineering and technical workforce of over 1200 Australians. Backed
by world-class management and quality systems, this local presence is
bolstered by strong relationships with small and medium sized enterprises
and access to the global resources of Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN).
As
the Air Warfare Destroyer Mission Systems Integrator, Raytheon Australia
will Integrate
the non-Aegis elements of the combat system and conduct combat system
trade studies; Develop
the design of the complete AWD combat system with the Commonwealth,
USN and the Aegis Combat System Engineering Agent; Develop
complete ship and Integrated Support Systems with the Platform System
Designer and Shipbuilder; and Develop
project management and systems engineering structures and deliver mission
systems integration.
Selected by the Government in June 2007 after a rigorous Two Pass Process,
Navantia is the Platform Systems Designer for Australia’s Hobart Class
Air Warfare Destroyers. Navantia will work with the AWD Alliance (DMO,
ASC and Raytheon Australia) to deliver Australia’s Hobart Class AWDs
to the Royal Australian Navy.
Navantia
has been designing and building ships for more than 250 years and offers
the AWD Alliance a wealth of valuable experience. Importantly, like Australia’s
AWDs, Navantia has built four F100s (currently building a fifth) using
a modular construction methodology ensuring efficiency benefits for the
design of Australia’s HOBART Class.
Navantia
will act as a subcontractor to the Commonwealth and personnel in the
Design Team will be integrated seamlessly into the Alliance working environment
to achieve common Alliance goals. The ongoing productive and open relationship
between Navantia and the Alliance will help ensure the Royal Australian
Navy receives the best capability on time and on budget.
Lockheed
Martin and the US Navy. The
AWD Alliance will work alongside the United States Navy and its Aegis
Combat System Engineering Agent, Lockheed Martin, to deliver the Aegis
capability to the HOBART Class AWDs.
The
US Navy Aegis Combat System, incorporating the state-of-the-art AN/SPY-1D(V)
phased array radar forms the core capability of the Hobart Class AWDs.
Aegis is the worlds foremost advanced air defence.
